Clayton G. Harrison, Sr. 85, transitioned this life on Tuesday, March 2, 2021.
Known affectionately as “Bo-Pete”, he was born on August 12, 1935, to the late Daniel (Bus) Harrison and Beaulah Caison, in Winnsboro, South Carolina. Clayton attended White Oak Baptist Church in Winnsboro, South Carolina as a child. Clayton joined the United States Army and eventually married Shirley Moragne on June 17, 1958. Clayton and Shirley, along with their growing family, travelled stateside and overseas throughout his Army career. Clayton retired from Fort Monmouth, NJ in 1974 and the family settled in Neptune, NJ.
Following his retirement from Fort Monmouth, NJ he became employed as a Mail Handler with the United States Postal service in 1974.. After retiring from the Post Office, Clayton became a Crossing Guard with the Neptune Township Police Department in Neptune, NJ. He remained in that position until he was injured in a fall in 2015.
Clayton was reserved but unfailingly supported his wife Shirley, whose gregarious personality balanced his reservation. Despite his reserved spirit, Clayton took pleasure in watching his children grow, mature, and begin their own families. He loved caring for his grandbabies and great grands, always bouncing them on his knee.
Clayton’s final years were spent in the care of his eldest son, Clayton Jr. and then his youngest daughter, Cheryl Dye. Their unwavering support and care ensured he was happy and well cared for.
Clayton’s beloved wife, Shirley, predeceased him in February 2016. The shock of her death was a turning point that he never reconciled. Clayton is survived by his four children: Jacqueline Thomas (Augustus) of Silver Spring, Maryland, Cheryl Dye (Marc) of Jonesboro, Georgia, Clayton Harrison, Jr. of Stafford, Virginia, and Sean Harrison (DeAngela) of Holly Springs, North Carolina. He is also is survived by six grandchildren Aarika Shoemate (Cheryl), Marcus Thomas (Jackie), Ashli Shoemate (Cheryl), Adrienne Thomas (Jackie), Jordan Harrison (Clayton, Jr.), Myiles Harrison (Sean), Alyssa Harrison (Clayton Jr.) and Selena Harrison (Sean), and five great-grandchildren Janei Johnson (Aarika), Samia Wilson (Ashli) , Alijah Shoemate (Aarika), Kaiden Shoemate (Aarika), and Josiah Shoemate (Aarika).
In addition to his wife, Clayton was predeceased in death by his parents – Daniel Harrison and Beaulah Caison Harrison, brothers Jason Harrison (Gloria), Roland Harrison; sisters Ernestine Henry, Rosa May Bennett (Harold), Ethel Zimmerman (Harold), Adell Harris, brother-in- law Clarence Chapple and granddaughter, Jasmyn Thomas. He leaves behind siblings Missouri Scott (Joe) of Augusta, GA, Marva Chapple of Seat Pleasant, MD and Daniel (Bo) Harrison (Elnora) of Charleston, SC. along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends to mourn his death.
Clayton’s wishes were to be cremated. As a result of COVID, the family will not have a funeral service. Instead, the family will celebrate Clayton’s life by hosting a picnic in Winnsboro, SC in August 2021. The family is requesting that donations are made to: http://act.org/goto/Pedaling_Memories
